1886
February 1st: John HORTON (36)
Devizes
John Horton shared a house at Bradford-on-Avon with his aged father, who was having a relationship with their housekeeper, Charlotte Lindsay. On 21 November 1885, Horton and his father had a fierce quarrel over the woman while out walking and they squared up. Horton beat his father to death, inflicting terrible injuries. He then went back to the house and attacked Miss Lindsay with a razor; she died on the following morning. Horton was convicted at Wiltshire Assizes on 13 January. In his defence he claimed that he hadn't intended to kill them and that many of the witnesses at the trial had falsely testified against him. He was hanged by James Berry who gave him a drop of six feet.
